You would be better off googling “how to read body language” and reading a couple paragraphs. Most of it is common sense or can be found in any magazine article. Save your money.

I wish I would have had this book a long time ago. It really helps to get an idea of what the other person is thinking when you are talking with them. I have learned to watch for tell tale signs now, and I know when to shut up or perhaps take a different approach.

This book left me with mixed feelings. I’ve read other books on the same subject and the information is old but it still works. Like the other books this was a fast and easy read. Again it is very useful if you’re in sales. Always a helpful tool to have. This book will get you started and sharpening your sales skills. Heavy reading, but worth it.4
This is a more advanced strategy based bible for the busy trader and the mindset involved. I bought this one along with Trading in the Zone and found the two of them compliment each other quite nicely. He covers a wide range of philosophies from the greats, and helps you see through the problems of over trading today with an overload of access to information, and a media full of pump and dump charlatans.

Knowing yourself3
A serious trader or investor can never dismiss this book. It’s a must read considering there are not very many investment psychology books written with a comprehensive coverage. And if you know Pring’s background and have read more of his books, you will understand this work better. He has done a good work in nailing the points of Investment psychology specially by dedicating a section on “Knowing yourself”. Easily one of the best books written on the subjet. One reading is not enough if you want to really get “IT”.

Good read but not very useful for beginners3
This book utilizes the historical events of various markets (mostly the US stock market) to explain various behaviours of market participants. The information is concise and each chapter deliver its points clearly. Part 3 of the book even list the trading rules of various well known authors/traders so that the readers can feel the importance of discipline as these well known individuals have to list a set of rules to remind themselves what not to do.
One thing I do not like are quoted results from research on trader psychology. The conclusions mentioned do not really sound very scientific nor making any sense. e.g. only “successful” traders are studied and conclusion is made without mentioning any similar study to prove such quality do not exist on “unsucessful” traders.
Overall, this is a good read for someone who already have experience in trading the market and would like to start learning something about the psychology aspect of trading. It will not be useful at all for a beginner who has not experience the emotional ups and downs related to trading, as the beginner is not likely to be able to connect with the content at all.

Uniquely quantifies the risk associated with investments.
While, for many decades, simulation has been the most commonly used technique available for risk analysis of a variety of complex systems, its meaningful popularity, outside engineering and the sciences, has only started to build. James Wright’s book provides a comprehensive guide to the application of the Monte Carlo simulation tool as a means of uniquely quantifying the risk associated with any technical investment project. Even though Wright’s book specifically addresses the most complex case of evaluating “technical projects” the process is readily applicable to evaluate high-tech and other investment projects.

In Part I, Wright’s innovative method of presenting technical due diligence, with its step-by-step approach to building a complex system, contains several practical examples. It is an excellent introduction to the use of Monte Carlo simulation to a broader audience with common interests in venture capital. In Part II, he covers different commonly used discrete and continuous random variables with relevant examples. In this part, Wright’s extensive reviews of triangular and angular random distributions, and their applications in analyzing risk for technical projects, provide a helpful approach to simplify the application of the Monte Carlo simulation in other areas. Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine1
Do NOT buy this book from Superbookdeals!
They misrepresented the product that they’re selling– I thought I was ording the ENTIRE Harrison’s but only Volume II arrived.

After spending much time on the phone with their representative, they came to the conclusion that it was MY FAULT for not reading their disclaimer at the bottom of the page in small print stating that this is a two-book set. I still have yet to see this disclaimer.

Superbookdeals needs to re-list this book under a DIFFERENT image and a DIFFERENT title!
I will never buy from these folks again!
It would be best to purchase your Harrison’s at a medical bookstore.
I’m a medical student and do not have a lot of time to go to the post office to return (what is know 2 copies of Volume II!). ARGH!!!!

Excellent introduction
Not only because of the Basel II Accords but also because of the enormous impact of credit derivatives, collateralized debt obligations, and other forms of credit risk management, the modeling of credit risk has become a multi-million dollar industry. The current credit crisis has certainly pointed to the need for more powerful credit risk modeling, to a degree where most of the concepts used to this date must be discarded or at least radically revised. The challenge will be to find algorithms and reasoning patterns that can be straightforwardly implemented and have the capability of monitoring, acquiring, and modeling accurately the credit markets in a manner that is independent of the time scale of the credit transactions.

Although short in comparison to most books on financial modeling and financial engineering, this book gives a sound overview of some of the more popular approaches to credit risk modeling, with references included for those readers who need more details. The authors’ emphasis is on the conceptual background, and so a lot of the more straightforward computational routines are left out. In particular, even though the authors mention Monte Carlo simulations they are not performed explicitly in the book. Proofs of some of the main results are also left to the references. In addition, it is a monograph rather than a textbook, so no exercises will be found. Instructors who intend to use the book in an actual course on credit risk modeling will have to devise their own.

The book’s unique feature, and one that it is widely cited for, is that it includes detailed discussion of correlated defaults. Some other features of the book that make it stand out include: 1. For those interested in Basel II, included is a discussion of the `exposure at default’ (EAD), which is defined simply as the sum of the outstanding balances and a fraction of the loan commitments. This fraction is the expectation value of the random variable that governs the fluctuations of the utilization of the loan commitment. 2. The discussion of `copula functions’ and their use in risk management. A copula is simply a multivariate distribution that is constructed so that it has standard uniform marginal distributions. Their use has exploded in credit risk modeling, mostly in the area of credit derivatives, which the author devotes a chapter to in the book. The authors discuss their use in the CreditMetrics/KMV model, with emphasis on the ability of copulas to manipulate the tail dependence of multivariate distributions. The authors point to the need for a calibration methodology for fitting copulas to credit portfolios. 3. The superb discussion on alternative risk measures via the concept of a `coherent’ risk measure. Most interesting is the discussion on `expected shortfall’ and its comparison with VAR (which is not a coherent risk measure). Also of great interest, and very well written, is the treatment of the variance/covariance approach, which as the authors remark is similar to beta-factor models and can be validated in much the same way. 4. The treatment of the term structure of default probabilities, which follows in much the same way the methodologies and concepts in interest rate modeling. The authors’ discussions of this topic lead one to believe that a kind of `unified’ theory of credit and interest rate modeling is viable, and in fact there are signs in some commercial products, such as CreditMetrics/KMV, of this unification.

read this before going for it
Well first off I would like to tell anyone who doesn’t have a solid working knowledge of calculus (including multivariate) to avoid this book as it requires multiple integrals and infinite series and sequences. Now onto the good and the bad:

THE GOOD:

This text explains concepts very well and is FULL of examples. I mean literally 3/4 of the book, maybe more, is examples. Every chapter also has a section of problems that have partial solutions, which can come in very handy. This is pretty much all that is good about this text, but keep in mind that explaination is the most important part of any textbook.

THE BAD:

The proofs skip plenty of steps. And I mean plenty, so much that a proof in the book would take 5 lines but when my professor proved it in class it would take him nearly 15. Also while there are tonnes of examples, too many are theoretical and very hard. The book costs a hefty amount of change and is suprisingly small, Author couldl have given few more examples to make it interesting. However the worst thing about this book is how the author leaves important things in with the text often. However most these things are small, and overall the text is a good intro to probability theory.

a very good book
The authors wanted to write the book that they themselves would have liked to read before starting a profession in risk management. I am working for a treasury consultancy firm. This book was the best of the five I bought. The text is very clear yet does not assume too much prior knowledge. It covers theory as well as industry practice. The book contains much advanced statistics and readers must have some background in order to handle this. The authors keep it simple but not too simple. Their approach is pragmatic throughout. I am really happy to have read this book when I started doing work in credit risk management.

rip off1
This material could’ve been condensed down to a long brochure. Nearly the same info as found in ‘Relax into Stretch’ which I stupidly bought as a companion book (It is not more than a few good pages of info either)

very thin on factual information1
Like many of Pavel’s other books, this one could be written in 3 or 4 pages, the rest just being repetitious filler. Someone who has never worked out probably can benefit a little from this, but I too found it useless in preserving or improving flexibility, although there may be some value in lubricating/warming up of the joints with some of the movements. Save your money, do not buy any of his written material (dvds are just as bad).

A refreshing draught of pragmatic medicine
This is a truly excellent book. So often, medical authors are intent on impressing their readership with their knowledge of obscure minutae (a detailed knowledge of genetics and/or immunology seems to be key to a bright future in academic medicine at the moment, with public health and prevention appearing to be considered rather low brow !).

This state of affairs rarely helps the clinician or laboratory doctor toiling away at the coal face, trying to do the right thing for the patient without ending up in medico-legal hot water !

This book doesn’t do this. Instead, it provides the reader with useful insights into the rational practice of medicine, in particular endorsing the tremendous value of lateral thinking in medicine.

The section on Infection and Tropical Medicine is particularly valuable. Apart from man himself, the biggest challenge to our species remains infection, the only new diseases that will come along will be infectious in nature, the general public remain fascinated and frightened by infections (just look at the impact of SARS in 2003 !), and many infections are treatable and/or preventable if only we can get round to considering the possibility that the patient might have them !. Indeed, a patient’s best interests remain best served by their doctor retaining a supicious mind ! This chapter makes this abundantly clear.

The other sections are also excellent, especially the wonderful opening chapter on symptoms and signs.

I would not only recommend medical students and junior doctors read this book - many senior clinicians and medical academics would have their personal and professional horizons usefully broadened by their thumbing through this first rate effort.

I look forward to the second edition.

If I Could Own Only One Hypnotherapy Book, It’d Be This One5
If I could own only one hypnotherapy book, it would be Dave Elman’s “Hypnotherapy.” First published in 1964, Elman’s book continues to exert an influence, whether credited or not, on authors such as M. Gerald Edelstein, Roger P. Allen, and the late William W. Hewitt. The confidence and enthusiasm the author conveyed in these pages are utterly infectious. I can only imagine what it was like to attend one of his seminars. A former stage hypnotist (among several other careers), Elman developed a training course in hypnosis for doctors and dentists. This text derives from transcripts of those trainings.

The abundance of useful material in this book includes: Elman’s rapid, easy, and highly effective induction method; methods for inducing and assesing the depth of the Esdaile state; and the application of hypnoanalysis to phobias and allergies. There is also a 39-page chapter entitled “Questions Doctors Ask.” Elman’s tone throughout is direct, practical, earthy, yet eminently informed and informative. He also had the good sense not to overstate his case: “I don’t think hypnosis is the last word in medicine, but I do think it is an important tool” (p. 254).

Proponents of more indirect methods of hypnosis may be put off by Elman’s directive style, but it works. It also provides an excellent foundation on which beginning practitioners can build their style.

In light of its enormous practical value and the sheer enjoyment of reading it, there is very little negative I could say about this book. The author’s view of what purport to be memories of intrauterine and past-life experiences is rather limited. He viewed such experiences as nothing more than dreams unintentionally induced by the physician and having “no basis in fact” (p. 310). He did not seem to consider the possibility that even if such accounts are only dreams they may still resonate symbolically with patients’ core conflicts, thus having enormous therapeutic value. But again, this is a minor, and even nitpicking criticism, given the embarrassment of riches to be found in the rest of the book.

Elman (5/6/1900-12/5/1967) was himself something of a renaissance man. He became interested in hypnosis as a child when he saw first hand the relief it afforded his father from otherwise intractable pain of terminal cancer. A talented musician by his teens, Elman went on to perform on the vaudeville circuit, and he co-composed several songs with “father of the Blues,” W. C. Handy, one of which was “Atlanta Blues.” Later he had a career in radio that included several years spent hosting a program called “Hobby Lobby.” This lasted until 1948 when Elman began his new career as hypnosis educator to medical and dental professionals. This book is his lasting legacy.

You’re NOT a hypnotherapist if you didn’t read parts of this book5
I’ll be honest with you. I haven’t read the whole book. But I know that it is the most important piece of paper in hypnosis.

Why? Because finally we have fundamental scientfic laws in our profesion just like in physics. People always have said that hypnosis is “an altered state that has the theta brainwave state”. But now we know that it is the bypas of the critical factor. And finally we have a nice definition for it.

I realize that some people might not like the techniques that were written in this book. (Mainly because they were trained in other techniques and now don’t want to try anything new). The inductions in this book are pretty much the essence of modern hypnotherapy.

If you want a profesional book about hypnosis get this one.

If you want a metaphysical pseudoscientific monologe about hypnosis go read someone else. (”Hypnosis is a state where the power of god flows freely through you” (haha))

Excellent - 5 stars!5
This book is very fast paced and enlightening. I have read many books that introduce Hypnosis and this book leaves them all trailing behind and is quite simply in a league of its own.

Its writen in a humourous and direct manner and sheds light on many areas concerning the 5 basic hypnotic states. Mr Elman has written this book primarily for Therapists and Drs and subsequently there is much to learn from this viewpoint.

I agree with the above reviewer that the case regarding the homosexual client was not ideal (the understanding of homosexuality was outdated, and I have to stress there was absolutely NO homophobia suggested in the text), Mr Elman treated this patient with utmost respect and helped him overcome his Depression.

Even now looking at the contents page of this book impresses me at how many topics are dealt with. And they are all covered with great devotion and attention to detail. There is absolutely no waffle in this book and I treat it as one of the best works ever!

A must resource for any Hypnotist/Hypnotherapist!

About the Author
Brett McLaughlin has been working in computers since the Logo days. (Remember the little triangle?) He currently specializes in building application infrastructure using Java and Java-related technologies. He has spent the last several years implementing these infrastructures at Nextel Communications and Allegiance Telecom, Inc. Brett is one of the co-founders of the Java Apache project Turbine, which builds a reusable component architecture for web application development using Java servlets. He is also a contributor of the EJBoss project, an open source EJB application server, and Cocoon, an open source XML web-publishing engine. He is author of the soon-to-be-released O’Reilly book, Building Java Enterprise Applications.

A book worth owning
The author covers some background, but mainly sticks to the business end of dealing with XML using java. The book is set out so you can read the parts that are relevant to getting a particular piece of technology working quickly.

Before reading this book I had never written an XML parser, but within a couple of days I was able to rework a parser to make it work both faster and with a smaller memory footprint by following the guidelines in this book. The details are not covered in great depth, but enough to get a job done, and make this a portabe reference.

Another book worth owning from the O’Reilly press.

Good but could be more.
Second editions are always great. However, I find that I dont like all of the API reference in the book. I would rather look at APIs electronically and talk concepts in the book.

Good introduction, a little diffuse
Compared with .NET and XML this book tends to wander and rat hole a little. The book covers the basics. The SAX and DOM approaches. It also covers XSLT and serving XML. It also covers advanced topics like Castor, JDOM, and web services. But most of the subjects are covered at a cursory level and do not serve as a complete introduction.

There is a small reference at the end of the book which is not as easy to read as the APIs described in the Nutshell style.

I gave this book four stars because, while it does lack focus, it is a good introduction to the XML APIs for Java. In the third release they should concentrate a little harder editing in some focus and a better reference section at the end.

Great guide. Highly recommended.
The book is organized into 25 daily readings, and postulates that by focusing our attention on certain ways of thinking, we can become a more critical thinker, which in turn helps us “observe, monitor, analyze, assess, and reconstruct” our thinking, which can help us live better lives.

After reading this book for the prescribed 25 days, I have to agree that my thinking did improve and my life was made richer by focusing my attention on the daily thinking goals. For example, Day 9 has you thinking through implications; on Day 14 you are to stop thinking like a conformist; and on Day 21 you are to strive to be a citizen of the world.

Once you read through the book, the authors suggest turning this 25 day plan into a 25 week plan whereby you’d focus on each single day’s thinking suggestion for an entire week. I will definitely read this book again and again.

Political Correctness Disguised as Critical Thinking
This book does provoke thought which is what it was meant to do, but it doesn’t examine itself critically. From the book, “Needless to say, food manufacturers and the sugar industry have a vested interest in avoiding the obesity issue, since they are the primary contributors to it.” While the first half of this statement is true, saying that these industries “… are the primary contributors to it [obesity].” is uncritical to say the least. Maybe the prime contributors are the people themselves and their poor eating habits. The book exhorts people not to be victims, but paints them here as victims of the cunning sugar industry.

The section “Be a Citizen of the World” only makes things worse. “Take one world problem - for instance, global warming, malnutrition, disease, overpopulation - and find out as much as you can from multiple international sources. Then compare what your nation is doing about the problem. Are you surprised by what you find?” Maybe they should have the reader consider the problems themselves? Are there others who disagree that the problem exists (global warming), what are some of the contributing factor of these problems (Banning DDT to control mosquitoes that carry malaria), and are there agendas behind these “problems” (”The Population Bomb” was released in 1968 why is overpopulation being rehashed).

Mental Health
I was looking for an excercise book for mental health to keep from becoming distorted and this fit the bill perfectly. It is rewarding to practice the lessons both to yourself and others around you.

Looking for the user’s manual that should have come with your life? This compendium of socially acceptable responses to every conceivable opportunity for personal embarrassment or inadvertent insult is as close as you’re likely to get. Post, great-granddaughter-in-law to the famous Emily, carries on the family business as a recognized authority and frequently interviewed and published author. Far from quaint, her update to the 1922 classic includes sections on how to graciously discuss a potential sex partner’s past and the circumstances under which one can re-gift in good conscience. These new sections seamlessly co-exist with discussions on perennially necessary topics, such as where to place a soupspoon when setting a formal table and whether one may wear white after Labor Day (the answer is yes). This integration of new material with old, according to Post, follows the same basic principles that underlay Emily Post’s original version—showing respect and consideration for others while placing a premium on honesty, graciousness and deference. The original book was considered revolutionary in its time because it recast manners from rigid Victorian rules into behavior that was based on ethics, values and common sense. This latest version isn’t revolutionary, but it’s useful. It also serves as a reminder of how individual choices may affect others and how easy it is to choose—words, wardrobes, gifts and actions—more wisely. At 800-plus pages, cover-to-cover reading isn’t intended. This is a book best referred to like a wise old aunt who would be consulted as situations warrant. Regardless of how one consumes it, every section, from “Dining and Entertaining” to “You and Your Job,” tends to leave the reader feeling a bit improved for the effort and hopeful about Post’s assertion that good behavior is catching—the more it is displayed, the more it spreads.

I didn’t exactly find out about this book in a normal way.4
I’m a fan of musician Adam Green, who is the son of the book’s authors. I was on his website where it said “Adam’s parents wrote a book together” with a link. So I click on it, and it turns out to be for headaches. I’ve gotten migranes ever since I as little (and I guess all of my loud music doesn’t help). I ended up checking it out from the library and learned a lot about “managing my headaches.”

Dr. Mark Green treated me for migraines for about five years until I moved out of the area which made it very difficult to keep him as my neurologist (how sad for me!!). This book is written in the same style as how he manages his patients - nothing is set is stone, he is very aware of the many nuances of migraine as well as nuances of each patient’s physiology, and he is always at the cutting edge of technology. I recommend this book, and Dr. Mark Green, highly. (Since I never was treated by his wife, Dr. Leah Green, I cannot offer the same comments, but would presume that her level of excellence matches her husband’s)

I listened to the CD everywhere I go. It reinforces me to check for fundamentals before buying stocks. It provides specific instructions on what to look for and not speculate. I had bought stocks in the past and did not know company’s financial background. Now I will check my current stocks and see if I made the right choice.

Jacobs, cofounders of an investor relations consultancy, provide a basic introduction to the ways of Wall Street that will be useful to new staffers in investor relations (IR) departments, or to companies that are deciding how to handle IR. The most valuable part of the book comes in chapter 20, where the authors offer companies a good guide to handling earnings releases and stock analysts’ conference calls. The least valuable part is the oft-repeated advice to companies that they should hire investor relations consultants - like the authors. Did Buffett write this?5
I’ve read about 5 “Buffett” books and they ranged from utter garbage (the daughter-in-law books) to the mildly interesting. None really helped me invest better.

This book is different. I’ve read it probably 10 times now. Every chapter can change they way you think about investing.

The writing is clear and simple.

What follows is a totally groundless statement - i have zero evidence of this - but… the only other writer I know who writes so clearly on investment is Buffett himself, which leads me to suspect he may have been involved in the writing of this book …or maybe Buffet is the real writer. (apologies to mr vick - take my comment as a compliment if you really did write this)

Even if Buffett isnt the real writer, my guess is that this is the book he would write.

It’s my favourite book on investment. I have five or so copies at any one time and hand them out to friends who ask me for investment advise.

Misleads readers into thinking Buffett uses the exact method2
I am an avid reader of Warren Buffett’s writings, and I believe that Warren Buffett would disagree with many items in this book. For example, Warren Buffett previously described his method of discounting companies in other articles, and it does not match the author’s description.

I can see how this book would be highly rated to someone not familiar with the details of Buffett’s own articles and letters. But in my opinion, the book appears to only about 80% in agreement Buffett’s previous writings. This book can give the reader a good overview of Warren Buffett’s methods if they do not pay strict attention to the author’s details.

I have traded stocks since I was a teen. I have been familiar with Dr. Elder for years. Along the way, I have read many books on trading. His Come Into My Trading Room: A Complete Guide to Trading ranks among the best.

I’m usually not so much into study guides as they add nothing new to the table except picking out some points of the theory. Well was I dead wrong on this guide. It is not so much about checking did you remember the right numbers and names as it is much more focused on did you shift you point of view ? And every answer is well documented what the most effective point of view could be. I’ve learned quite a bit more with working through this study guide. I recently purged the study guide from Entries and Exists as well work my way through that too, and in time for the finals, participate in one of the trading camps.
Recommended for every one out there in the markets learning to ride the waves instead of getting smashed by them.

Great Reference & Starter
I purchased the Book of Alternative Assets in order to study for the CAIA Level 1 exam. The book is a great reference and starter to all kinds of alternative assets. It gives the reader a good overall view of the different tools and strategies of alternative investing. It’s a fairly qualitative approach and includes diagrams to aid in the delivery of concepts.

The book covers hedge funds, commodities and managed futures, private equity, credit derivatives, and corporate governance.

The hedge fund approach mainly covers the regulatory, risk, and investor perspectives. For example, if you were a foundation or endowment, how would you assess a hedge fund or fund of funds?

The commodities and managed futures, private equity, and credit derivative sections begin with fairly elementary concepts and build from there to allow the reader to feel comfortable enough to talk about them with industry professionals and understand where the market is going with each field.

There are the occasional misspelled words, so it could be edited a little bit better, but it’s not too much of a distraction.

Even though it’s about 700 pages, it reads quickly. Overall, it’s a solid book and an easy read for the CAIA curriculum.

Good Book but do not upgrade to online version from amazon!
The content of the book is good and useful. However please do not upgrade to amazon online accesss. I upgraded and every other day you cannot acccess the entire book online.You can only browse first 8 pages and then when you call amazon customer service they would temporarily resolve the issue only to have the same issue reoccur again.

Great Reference
Nice overview of alternative asset classes. One reference of many we use for research, cross-reference, marketing and new associate education.

Topics such as Bilingual education, Intelligence tests, Racism and discrimination, Religion , and Transracial adoption are discussed with an emphasis on the differences that culture brings to these issues. Series of entries cover culture-specific syndromes, indigenous healing, and religious and spiritual beliefs.

The articles are for the most part at least one page in length. Many are much longer, and most include bibliographies. There is good use of see also references. An alphabetical list of articles and a thematic guide can be found at the beginning of the volume. The index is sufficiently detailed.

This is a timely and useful volume that has value for students and professionals alike. It would fit well in the collections of academic and large public libraries where multiculturalism is a topic of concern. Danise Hoover
